I Had To File Some Meat Off My Calluses

Calluses. That's a weird-sounding word.

I was having trouble sticking my H/O-P/O's on the low E, so I actually had to take some meat off, and get back to the fleshy part to give me some grip. :nails

Just thought I'd share that.

(Callus: Thickened layers of skin, often on the hands or feet, where friction repeatedly occurs. Calluses can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease, such as playing one's guitar for more than a few minutes just noodling and comparing cool tones.)

Calluses in Spanish (callos) also has another meaning that is actually meat. A recipe made with ox tripe stew with veggies and sausages.

Never tried, never will, because when I was a kid I thought it was made from actual calluses from the feet.

A while back, I didn't realize the hole I wore into the big toe space of the insole of my shoe, and had some crazy callus buildup on my big toe to the point where I couldn't walk barefoot. I could slice it off with a blade but part of it also grew upward into the toe so a few rounds of salicylic acid helped to draw it out. I've taken a drill with a grinder bit to my toe more than twice.

People sure love to glorify rock-hard calluses but they're painful. I used to work in a dry dusty container yard and like an idiot, never wore gloves. My hands were like leather after a few years of treating them like crap and the skin would split and it would suck.

Get yourself one of these:

I use one like this on the outside edge of both my feet...

Yep! Working on my feet since I was 14, I’ve got some pretty interesting calluses on my feet. The sides of my big toes I’m quite certain can be used for bulletproofing material, but I have one particularly odd one above my heel, in my arch that you can straight up stab with a knife until the knife sticks in and I won’t feel it. :rofl

My hands, despite working with them for years, are baby soft. Even my fingertips on my fretting hand, the only time you can tell I play guitar is when I take a week or two off then play like crazy and the calluses get all chewed up. Outside of that they look and feel like regular finger tips that have never touched a guitar.

I don't really have calluses on my fretting hand but I've had someone who was a former coach and Olympic champion tell me that he believes that I've developed extra layer of muscle under my left-hand fingertips from playing guitar. 🤷‍♂️

The longest I didn't play guitar was while in the Military. It was 4 months. Man, when
I picked up a guitar again it hurt instantly! Was like starting over.

Calluses are my friend. :beer
