In my experience humbucker pickups have more mids and sometimes lows whereas Single Coil pickups are brighter with extended high frequency response.
I’d like to use a 5 band Ibanez parametric equalizer to turn my humbucker only ESP in to something akin to a single coil when I stomp and activate the EQ.
I’ve been able to get it in the neighborhood by ear… generally boosting frequencies above 3K or so to mimic the brightness. Sucking out some low mids around 300-500hz. But I’d like to be a bit more scientific about it.
So, I’m looking for some information about generalized differences between them. Frequency response graphs, measurements on various pickups, etc. I know different models will produce different responses but I’m looking for just again, generalized differences.
It would be lovely if I could throw the P-90 in the mix too!
I plan to use this info to mock up something resembling Ty Tabor’s Strat/L-5 amp tones on Gretchen goes to Nebraska. His Strat had an onboard preamp booster and I’m hoping the higher output of the humbucker modified to have single coil response would get me closer. I use only the Seymour Duncan JB or SH-5 Custom in the bridge position if that helps. The latter is voiced like a ‘59 but has 2X the output.
Anyone want to help out please? Any thoughts are welcome. It sure would be nice if we had something similar in concept to what we have with IR’s for speakers but within the realm of pickups! That would be killer.
