I have used Tortex picks for decades. Usually blue 1.00mm or. Purple 1.18mm sometimes green .88’s. I recently tried a 1.5mm Primetone Triangle and loved it!

Quite a bit heavier that usual but as I’ve gotten better, it seems the extra thickness suits me. The material is very nice as well. Apparently the edges are hand filed?
I ordered some 1.3 versions along with a “rounded” one. I guess after so many years I never thought a pick would surprise me.

I’m gonna try a 2.0mm. fake tortoise shell version by Dunlop as well. Maybe Billy Gibbons, Brian May and others who used coins as picks were on to something after all.

I have been using purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14 picks forever. I have tried others but always come back to these. I like the material and thickness of them. I use these picks for electric as well as acoustic guitars and mandolin. I will occasionally go to the yellow (.73) or green (.88) for a change for a different tone and feel but most of the time it is the 1.14 in my hand.

I tried the Ultex picks for a while. They make a clicking sound when they hit the strings that drove me nuts so I went right back to Tortex (Delrin) for my preferred material.

I've used the .73 Primetone quite a bit, and liked it. I also quite like the .73 Flow. Lately, I've been using either a InTuneGP custom big jazz pick, or a Cool Picks medium sharp, which is .80.

I have an old silver Mexican Peso coin pick somewhere. Just a coin won’t work well, they get ground down into a pick shape. I found that I did like the stiffness and precision feel, and the thickness bothered me less than I expected. That said, I didn’t love the metal on metal tone, the size of it or the general experience.

I tried and did not like acrylic picks, I do sorta like the gravity gold picks, and more recently I have been starting to like polished stone picks in the 2-3mm range. I feel like they are everything good about the Peso picks with a better size, feel, and tone.

Acrylic picks really bother me, both the feel and the sound. It’s just wrong for me. However, for some reason primetone and flow I think are acrylic, and I get along with them. Weird.

“Dunlop Primetone guitar picks are primarily made from Ultex, a material based on Ultem resin. This material is known for its durability and for closely resembling the feel and sound of tortoise shell. The Primetone series features hand-burnished sculpted edges, designed for smooth release and articulate playing.

There’s a Petrucci version too which says a bit to me.

Here’s another one I mentioned ordering earlier. Check out Blue Chip picks as well.

Ah that explains it. Not acrylic anyway.

As for the Blue Chip and Red Bear stuff, I’ve always wanted to try a bougie pick, but they’re always quite thick. I like medium much more.

I’ve always been .88 to 1.14 but trying the thicker ones really surprised me. Trying a Primetone Triangle 1.5 really opened my eyes.

BTW, if anyone wants to try out any of these picks (or others) without getting raped on the price try Strings and Beyond. Compare prices and you’ll see what I mean.

Thanks for correcting my misinformation when I typed 1.18 without calling me out.

Yes, the purple tortex picks are fantastic. I probably have at least a hundred of them, the greens and blues as well. 72-packs FTW. Great way to spend MF points.

I would love having some foreign coin as a pick. Or maybe a Quarter or Half-Dollar from my birth year. I’ve tried them before and you can def get some killer unique tones from coins. But I always fretted about damaging strings prematurely.

I have been buying strigs from Strings and Beyond for many years. I usually stock up when they run sales on them.

I have got all the way up to 2.0mm in the Dunlop picks. I like the really heavy picks for something new and different. I always gravitate back to the 1.14 though. I have a V Pick and a Gravity pick as well that I will grab once in a while for something new. They are kind of cool but not something I would reach for on the regular. They are also kind of expensive.
