Guitar Center employee allegedly charged over $5,000 to credit cards that belonged to “rude” customers

Everyone of us who also uses credit cards or shops retail at all absorbs the costs of theft. It is spread around and hidden, but it's part of the prices we pay every day.
Eh, enjoy your higher interest rates. It becomes all of our problem

Good lord, you guys. The comment I was replying to was "if some kid ripped me off like that I would very quickly become his least favorite person on the planet" - which is understandable if you're on the hook for the $5k - but the cardholder isn't, because it's a credit card. Had it been "if some kid used my credit card number and, while I would not be personally liable, I would lament the increased fees that cardholders and merchants pay as a result of credit card fraud" I would not have commented.

Some people are basically fed up with all the bullshit that has been going on and have zero tolerance for this shit anymore. Dishonest people have made all of our lives worse, and they should be severely punished whenever the opportunity arises.

I'll try to do better next time, up to and including "lament" in the post.

The customer's liability varies by state. In some states the CC company is on the hook for all, others the customer has to pay the Federal $50 maximum. Even then, when a number is stolen, there is all the time and hassle of getting a new number and updating everything that needs to be updated. It's not like there are no "costs" to the customer he stole from.

FYI, as someone who's very recently dealt with fraudulent charges on the vendor side, I assure you it's "funny" only in the sense of what people will attempt to get away with. So perhaps my original post should have been more clear.

That's what I found funny about it. How anyone could be stupid enough to do it and not realise they'd immediately get caught.
