I will say every time I adjust anything by feel rather than setting to known numbers - guitars, bikes, whatever - I always have to go back and readjust again at least once.
Knowing the numbers of how you like your setup makes it easier and a lot quicker to dial stuff. Also I could make your guitar feel right in a particular place but different in other parts. Quantifying the whole process to what you like is useful and saves a lot of time. Most people who bring me things telling me what needs doing are actually way off the mark. The number of times someone brings a guitar that chokes out telling me the frets need leveling when actually there is too much relief is notable.

But you are right in that it must feel right in the end for you first and foremost. I’m just talking about learning about how to get there quickly and efficiently. Some guitars for whatever reason ( vintage/ different styles) may not ever get to the play you want. Then you have to optimise it and decide if that is something that you can use.

Hi, am looking to buy an expensive strat online and I learned that the shop can do an inspection on the guitar, along with a setup, prior to shipping.

This would obviously mean unboxing etc, I suppose I wanted to be the first to open the box coming from the factory haha but having someone experienced to check before shipping is probably a good idea.

Thoughts?

Do you trust the shop? Are you familiar with any previous work (have seen how they setup their guitars?)

If not - yeah I wouldn't do it - I think it's better to learn how to setup the guitar yourself - you can apply all the time and attention you want that way.
