Eric Johnson Rig/Info Dump

I had one of those Fender modern spec strats with no string tree which was the same. Even with enough winds it still wasn't great so when I'd gotten properly annoyed with it I added a string tree and after that it was fine.

I put the Gotoh staggered vintage tuners on the Classic 50's Strat I had, but still had the string tree in place and the strings underneath it because pretty much the only area I'm a traditionalist with is with Strats and it drove me nuts to not have the string tree. :rofl

I'm exactly the same, except with me it's strats and teles. I moved that strat on in the end. The modern features annoyed me more than I thought they would.

I don't use a string tree on my no.1. Thought about adding one but no point if it's not issue for me. All my others have them though.

Yeah, it's fair to say I'm the same with Teles, with a strong preference for the 50's logo. I'm a bit more lenient with Strats as I really dig all eras after playing them and I have a huge love of CBS-era headstocks + Floyds.

I mainly did it because the lack of break angle meant the string could pop out of the nut if I played hard. It helped that I also thought it looked better with a string tree.

There's definitely a balance there with the nut slots. Too deep will run into problems but too shallow runs the risk of popping out. Luckily I feel like mine is in its happy place right now.

I'm pretty flexible on teles. As long as they have vintage kluson-style tuners, a one-piece neck, single ply pick guard, volume, tone, and 3 way switch, two pickups with bridge pickup being a tele-style single coil with base plate, bridge has 3 brass saddles and the color is either butterscotch or drawn from the old DuPont Duco catalogs...
