Digital Wind Instruments: could they be a common thing for small band gigs?

At first I was like “wtf” but then, isn’t this kind of like an electric playing crazy sounds an acoustic couldn’t pull off?

Yes, if this is your electric guitar

I get your point. A closer comparison would 100% be a keyboard and piano. If this thing is analyzing the flow of air, and allowing you to manipulate sounds through that processing, I don’t see how it should be knocked when an electric keyboard has no issue being part of the music we love. Maybe I’m missing why y’all are trashing on this idk lol

As a kid I played saxophone and got to play the Yamaha wind instrument. Just like with drums, it’s too far from the real thing to be a full replacement. However, I saw Michael Brecker use one in concert to make some 80’s GRP fusion.

A cooler thing I saw was when Joshua Redman attached piezo pickup to his sax and ran it through a Pod to play Led Zeppelin.

Yes, it is a breath controller with note selection buttons, it's not new (only niche), and I think it's great... except that I don't play any wind instruments so it's clearly not intended for me.
