Deep Dive into Adam Jones's Tones

Hahahah I started going down a gear rabbit hole, but I already have my rig setup for at least this week-

Petrucci Wah - Friedman BE-OD Deluxe - VP4 - Plexi50 w/Hot Mod - Fryette PS100

I'm going to use the lower gain channel on the BE-OD in place of the Micro Amp and the higher gain side for the more modern/high gain tones....though I'm pretty stoked with the Plexi50 on it's own and would be fine doing everything with just that.

The BBF Flanger in the VP4 is doing the trick for now, as are the delays, but if this project actually does something I'll certainly grab the actual pedals....all $350 worth of them. :rofl I gotta see if I can use the trim pots in the Petrucci wah to recreate the 535 setting.

The hard part about this will be 'practicing' the feedback sections when I can't crank up loud enough to get feedback.

The 105Q can get somewhat close to Adam Jones wah sounds.

I didn’t know this was a thing.

FWIW I own an early MIT BF-2 and am picky about flangers. The fractal model is VERY VERY close if not bang on.

Yeah, without tweaking anything and just setting it to how I would an actual one it was pretty damn close. Kinda my same observation as the vibe; it kinda sits on top of the tone rather than becoming part of it. Hahahahhaha I went on Reverb last night and started filling up my shopping cart and then thought, “Wait a minute dude, make sure these others dudes can actually play the fucking songs before buying MORE gear you don’t need when the VP4 is doing it just fine” :rofl

I'm excited for you on this Drew! :satan

It’ll be cool if the other dudes all hold up their parts well. While I think there’s 8 songs on the list for Friday, realistically I’ll have 4-6 that will be ready to play and I’m predicting 2 of those (‘Jambi’ and ‘The Pot’) are going to require some sorting out with the guys. It’s like Adam’s parts span the gamut of stupid simple, sounding-but-not-actually-being stupid simple and some straight up brain twisters with the simple addition or subtraction of one or two notes.

Put the Hot Mod back in the Plexi50, the Orville wasn’t sounding sharp enough so I grabbed the Edwards and while the EMG’s in a Tool setting may be sacrilege to some, they’re doing the trick better than the Aldrich was in the Orville. If things go well on Friday I’ll likely add my 5153 to the setup and do a dual-amp thing….and probably introduce a bunch of phase issues.

I *think* I’m in a good spot in regard to the tribute band thing; I’m not a huge Tool fan these days but I was at one point. I’ll have a blast playing these once I know the other guys are all going to land on the same beat, this will definitely get my “I just want to crank up” itch cured!

Fingers crossed for you! I don't have the back for the dual amps rig though. Unless there are "roadies" involved :rofl

Oh, this is only because I haven’t had to load up for a gig in 3-4 years. Once I do that once or twice I’ll be right back to a halfstack and that’s it!

The Superlead carries so much of the water anyway. In before Drew chases down a Recto and VH4. Giving it 2-3 weeks max.

Hahahahah if I ever dropped more than $3K on an amp and it wasn’t a IIC+, it’s because that tribute band is doing REALLY fucking good. :rofl

@DrewJD82 is this an existing band or 2 guys who want to get something started? It'd be cool if you were just dropping in to an existing production with all the visuals/live show stuff associated with a Tool gig sorted.

Not entirely sure on the history; the bassist started it and told me last week that the drummer hit him up immediately but I don’t know if that means months ago or the same time I responded to his ad. I’m intentionally not asking too many questions because I’ll likely talk myself out of it if I don’t hear everything I want to hear….which might save some time, but also might prevent me from giving it a shot.

You can’t have a shitty drummer in a Tool tribute. I’m really the only one who could potentially get away with being shitty. :rofl

I know I'm going to have to dodge a chair suggesting this in the Amp & Cab section of the forum, but Fractal has both great Superlead and Recto models. A dual amp preset through a stereo power amp into a single stereo 4x12 could probably get you very close to where you want to be with FAR less weight. I totally get wanting to drag the tube rig out to play though.

Drew talking about the 51513 but I'd much rather drag an FM9, power amp and cab(s) and use those amp models than use a real 5153 for it. Speaking of ducking :ROFLMAO:

I’ll likely give this a shot, my only gripe was that I’m not a fan of having two amps come out of the same cab, but that might actually be better in this situation. I wish that damn PS100 were a stereo poweramp!
