DEAL: Warm Audio Microphone Mystery Box

WA make some really excellent mics and there are a few WA models on sale at various online dealers at the moment .
So if your after a WA mic ? It might be cheaper to shop around and get the model you want.👍

Ive been watching this for a couple days and haven’t been able to bring myself to pull the trigger. It’s intriguing but I’d be so disappointed to end up with one of their lower end transformerless 47s.

I guess I’m too risk averse to gamble.

Reminds me of the Mystery Box thing Chase Bliss did, where they ended up dumping their excess stock of the Clean pedal in about 80% of the boxes they shipped. :ROFLMAO:

Spotted this on Reddit. Warm Audio is selling a mystery box where you can potentially get a mic that is way above the mystery box value.

They don't seem to ship to Finland so I can't take advantage, but maybe one of you US folks have been looking for new mics?
Thanks for posting this!

Wouldn't be surprised if this is a similar situation where most get one of the $299 mics.

But like the Chase Bliss, they still got something cool for less than what the new thing costs and had a bit of excitement. Let's see what our forumites get!

Warm Audio make outstanding Mics Studio gear and pedals.
depends what you compare to really. IMO they make a lot of compromises to get the cost down and I personally don't think those compromises are worth it (you can get similar quality gear for less, or much better gear for slightly more). I've owned a couple of Warm Audio bits over the years and ended up selling all of them-

I don’t mind WA gear, I’ve got the TB12 and I’ve been happy with it but I’ve not tried any of their mics. I’m kinda tempted by this but I have no need for one their lower end offerings. If I scored something like the WA14 I’d be pretty content with that.

I'd like to have a real U87. I know Warm Audio makes a clone, but I haven’t considered it seriously. Have you tried the Warm Audio version, @MirrorProfiles? Do you have any recommendations for a mic similar to the real U87?

I’ve only got experience with a real U87 (an older 80’s model). They’re OK mics but IMO they’re nothing too special and I don’t think they’re worth anywhere close to what they go for these days. I don’t see them as a £2000 mic - they’re a £500-1000 mic that sells for £2000,

Solid enough workhorse mic that rarely sounds bad on anything, but also not too spectacular. I’m probably not the person to ask as I wouldn’t recommend a real U87 let alone a clone.

C414 (ideally B-ULS but XLS is fine), OC818, AT4050 are all mics that cost significantly less and are (IMO) just as good as a U87. Neumann make some amazing mics but the U87 is just fine and overpriced these days.

If you’re determined to get one, I’d either get a real one, or go totally DIY and source the best parts you can - they aren’t too complicated to build, and they’ve been cloned so much that it’s easy to find suitable parts. Warm is (presumably) somewhere in the middle - you could upgrade parts, but you may as well have built from the ground up, or just gone straight to the real thing.

I don't get why you would pay good money for some "mystery" item. I don't know man, work too dang hard for my money to do that.

This is my stance overall. It doesn't even have to be a WA product, I just have this thing where I scrutinize purchases over $100 as a result of growing up broke. I'd be perturbed if I went for that and a $250 mic showed up, if I wanted the $250 mic, I'd have it already.

There's a little junk shop here that has a big palette of mystery boxes from Amazon. Not even sure how they get them but they swear that they have no idea what's in them and the Amazon packing is intact. They sell them for about $40. My sister in-law bought one and got a Milwaukee cordless drill so of course my wife had to go get one. Me, being the eternal pessimist, says you're gonna get robbed, but she has to play the game.

She is now the proud owner of a case of expired Pita Chips, a case of expired baby food and a battery operated dancing cactus.
