Boss PX-1 Plugout FX

It's like the HX One... but different.

"The BOSS PX-1 arrives pre-loaded with eight iconic effects, including the legendary DS-1 Distortion, OD-1 Over Drive, and CE-2 Chorus. But that’s just the beginning. Through the BOSS Effect Loader app, users can wirelessly load an additional eight effects from a curated list of BOSS classics."

Looks like some effects are paywalled 😡 Be prepared to pay Roland's Cloud Ultimate Tier access, at $199/year, if you want to play an RE-201 Space Echo model.

EDIT: Nope! The wording in the video is not really clear, but it turns out you get the PX-1 models in your PC if you buy Roland's Cloud service.

That seems like a cool utility pedal for fx you use occasionally. Less dedicated pedals needed on your board when this can be that occasional effect, while otherwise serving as say a delay or overdrive.

Against HX One, the benefit is smaller size, Boss fx if you like them and overall simplicity with no param scrolling etc.

"Comes with 16 effects: OD-1, SP-1, PH-1, SG-1, CS-1, TW-1, SD-1, DS-1, CE-2, BF-2, PN-2, OC-2, PS-2, VB-2, DD-2, and DF-2"

I'd be happy with that selection alone. And I'm sure this one won't have a noise issue like the HX One!

A Model Pass is a license for adding a new effect to the PX-1 Plugout FX compact pedal. Model Passes are available for purchase within the BOSS Effect Loader app for $9.99 each* starting in January 2026. Effects can be loaded into the PX-1 from the app via a Bluetooth® or USB-C® connection.

I like that you can easily toggle between pedals with a single footswitch. Wondering whether you could as well toggle between two incarnations of the same pedal, so you could, say, switch between a rhythm and lead variation of an SD-1. That'd be quite cool.
I also like that you don't have to save.
Depending on how well the models sound, this could be a very handy tool for recordings.

Pedal sounds pretty good in that demo, and reeeeally close to the originals. But then again, most modelers have excellent Boss models these days; i never A/Bed a CE-2, but i did try Helix's Stupor OD against a real Boss SD-1, and found it close enough to be indistinguishable most of the time.

Pricing might be a dealbreaker for the PX-1. $250 for 16 effects is a bit of an ask unless you really love Boss, specially given that additional pedals are $9.99, or $199/year.

Really wondering whether the OC-2 will track as good as the original. I could really do with a decent octaver pretty often (especially in case I'm in for some looping fun), but the ones in the HX series and the GT-1000 are pretty bad in comparison with an OC-2.

If you don't have to save I'm not sure how you could switch between two versions of the same pedal with different settings.

You can't.

Thanks. Possibly not much of a dealbreaker, though. My use case would be to have something allowing me to cycle through 2-4 "choice" FX. Is there a manual around already? While I know about the "FX swap" function, I'm wondering whether I could cycle between more than 2 FX slots. I've been doing that for a long time with the MS-50G, typically had those 2-4 choice FX prepared per gig and it's been most excellent.

If the MIDI capabilities let you recall pedals in with settings I'll probably pick one up to use in the wildcard spot where I have the M5 now on my baby board. I have some weird, deep love for that Boss pedal form factor.

Edit: Manual says all MIDI does is recieve and sync to MIDI clock -- soooo...that sucks.

The midi in appears to be for midi clock only unfortunately.

Oh, that's too bad.

Likely not for me then, even if the concept is quite appealing. Maybe they'll add some functionality later on (for me, cycling through more than just two sounds would be relevant for this to be a contender), but Boss being Boss doing Boss things, that's likely not gonna happen.
