Hint: They're both by the same person

When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy

Each microcosmic planet
A complete society

A simple kind of mirror to reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea

And...

The dancer slows her frantic pace in pain and desperation
Her aching limbs and downcast face aglow with perspiration

Stiff as wire her lungs on fire with just the briefest pause
Then flooding through her memory the echoes of old applause.

And she limps across the floor
And closes her bedroom door...

2 of my favorites! And the coolest thing about the 2nd one for me is, until the 4th line, I imagine a scene on a stage. And with the final, I think, "Wait. She's not dancing. Any more."

What a masterful songwriter he was!!

This song just popped in my head:

I got a way I can find you,
Down on melody ranch,
I know you're there most everyday,
That's where you like to spend some time alone

I need to talk to you,
Tell you what I feel, like
Warm "hellos" in the morning mist,
You're the magic that turns my heart around

Seems to me we're really living way too fast,
Oh when we should let the story of love last.
Sometimes I just want to go and drift away....
Move on to some forty mile town.

I got a way I can see you,
Close my eyes and start to watch the ancient water flow,
Like a crystal dance that paupers know so well.
That's the way kings keep dreamin',
Hold their head up high and live below forty mile skies,
The way that it can be in ocean towns.

Things of this world, guess we never really own;
Oh that mountain falls, and then we're going home,
We should try and make the best and get away....
And work on towards a forty mile town

Seems to me we really need to feel love more,
Oh, an ordinary smile opens the door.
Sometimes all I want to do is dream away....
And wake up in some forty mile town

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith
I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzlin' you
Is the nature of my game

Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Tsar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank, held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out
Who killed the Kennedy's
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reach Bombay

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzlin' you
Is the nature of my game

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails, just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me, have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politeness
Or I'll lay your soul to waste

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzlin' you
Is the nature of my game

I see the Middle Kingdom between Heaven and Earth
Like the Chinese call, the country of their birth
We all figure that our homes, our homes are set above
Other people than the ones, the ones we know and love, hey

In every place with a name
They play the same territorial game
Hiding behind the lines
Sending up warning sign

The whole wide world, an endless universe
Yet we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people, but we feed the machines
Can't really feel what international means
In different circles we keep holding our ground
Indifferent circles, we keep spinning 'round and 'round and 'round

We see so many tribes overrun and undermined
While their invaders dream of lands they left behind
Better people, better food, and better beer
Why move around the world, Eden was so near? Oh-oh

The bosses get talking so tough
And if that wasn't evil enough
We get the drunken and the passionate pride
Of the citizens along for the ride

The whole wide world, an endless universe
Yet we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people, but we feed the machines
Can't really feel what international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
Indifferent circles, we keep spinning 'round and 'round and-

They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
For a change of accent
Or the color of your shirt
Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

The whole wide world, an endless universe
Yet we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people, but we feed the machines
Can't really feel what international means
In different circles we keep holding our ground
Indifferent circles, we keep spinning 'round and 'round and 'round

At his peak, I think Jagger was the best lyricist around. It (and his singing) are often forgotten behind his status as a front man.

I would love to beat the face of any mother fucker
That's thinking they can change me
White knuckles grip pushing through for the gold
If you're wanting a piece of me I broke the mother fucking mold
I'm drowning in your wake
Shit rubbed in my face
Teething on concrete, gums bleeding

Dig
Bury me
Underneath
Everything that I am
Rearranging
Dig
Bury me
Underneath
Everything that I was
Slowly changing

I struggle in violated space
Sell out mother fuckers in the biz that try to fuck me
Hang from their T's rated P.G. insight
I ain't selling my soul when there's nothing to buy
I'm livid in my space
Pissing in my face
Fuck you while you try to fuck me

Neil??

I hate to say it, but lyrics are often an afterthought for me. I can probably recognize drum beats and basslines more easily!

This totally sucks...

but not the second...
That song, Losing It, always struck me in a certain way, because of the vision that Neil created, ended up not being what I had in my mind. Which too me, is masterful, when it comes to writing lyrics. Imo, nobody does it better!

Real one this time-

Standing neck deep in life, my ring of brass
lay rusting on the floor. Is this all?
Because it's not what I expected.

Somewhere along the way
friends I once held close
fled the fast lane.
I didn't notice,
I just had to make it.
Head down, nose in the grindstone;
the kiss of life
placed on my brow
kept sliddin' to the ground
and now it's buried six feet under.

Preaching from the floor again
the same old sad song,
"Bartender... bring another drink for their favorite son."

Where did it all go wrong?
What's the use in even holding on?
Here's to love, hate... and promises.

Almost called it today.
Turned to face "The Void"
numb with the suffering
and the question,
"Why am I...?"
So many times I've
tried and failed to
gather my courage, reach again for that nail.
Life's been like
dragging feet through sand,
and never finding...
