Battlefight: Katana vs Catalyst vs Spark

Positive Grid stuff sounds positively shitty. It’s amazing people give that company money. Katana 100, swap the speaker. Or get the head.

Yeah, they were on my never-buy-anything list......

....but then I needed a travel rig. Realizing that neither the Boss headphones nor the Spark Neo had replaceable batteries, I opted for the latter simply because it cost less....

Was so happy with it that my wife actually suggested I check out the Spark 2 as a practice amp. (Apparently she thinks I need to practice more, but I digress). Now I play that far more than I play my FM9 -- mostly just out of convenience, but also because there's a preset that is exactly the tone I've spent decades chasing. Hoping to recreate that tone on the FM9 over the holidays....

That said, I ain't ever gonna buy any of their software.

[I realize that contributes nothing to the OP, sorry.....]

Every time I hear people describe an amp as "boxy," I know to try it out. I've had three Blues Cube Hots for around a decade, and I'll never sell them. I love my Katana Artist MkII and now Gen3 (I kept both), as well as my Nextone Special. Friends with all manner of amps and modelers love the sounds I dial in with all of the above. And I've read them all (especially the Hots) described as "boxy" on the Internet.

And to be clear - I don't think the people calling them that are being dishonest. There's just an aesthetic axis that I realize strikes me differently than it strikes many other people.

The Catalysts, like some Line6 gear I've used or owned in the past, had a certain 'muffled' sound to my ear - and when I hear an amp sounding like that, I know it is probably something another player I know would really like. It suits his preference.

The lesson? Ask people online about features, or reliability, or weight, or ease of use. Never ask them if the sound of something is 'good' unless you already have an extensive knowledge of what they like the sound of, what kind of music they make, and so on.

I’d dig an Artist 3

Really just wanted an excuse to use “battlefight” in the thread title…

But…

Anyone played all 3 of these and have thoughts on pros/cons of each?

Ive had multiple Katanas, currently riding with a Spark 2, but there’s a Catalyst for sale locally for sub-$200 and it got me wondering.
Just bought a spark2… should arrive in a few days
