He actually had one that I thought wasn't bad called "I Believe".

I have an irrational dislike of singers unless they’re Freddie Mercury.
That said, and I pointed this out early you can chase me out of the room with Classic Rock or shred.
But what made me stop paying attention to the guys I listened to when I was young.
Here’s two more prime examples of guitar players who should’ve never want to be singers.
As for LA session guys, I’ve been enamored with them since first reading Tommy Tedesco’s column in Guitar Player magazine back in like 77 or so.
Also one of the reasons I joined AFM Local 47 asap after moving to LA in 87.

FIABD was one of the albums that really pushed me into taking guitar seriously. I started in '92, that album, SWTA, and Passion and Warfare changed my guitar life.

I like this one too. Steve's so good at guitar that while the gulf between his vocal and guitar chops may be wide, he's actually a pretty serviceable singer.

"I Believe" is great
I can get down with this! Really the only Vai I would choose to listen to is what I believe to be his high point; Eat 'Em and Smile. Which is a semi-hot take in and of itself?
As far as singers go; I am expectedly all over the place. I either want a Steve Perry or a Michael Kiske or I want someone with some character to their voice like a Bobby Blitz from Overkill or similar singers you wouldn't call great but their voices are instantly recognizable. We like what we like \m/
Ahh man I LOVE that album. As stated; I am not an instrumental guy but that album is something special to me. Terrible singing and ZZ Top ripoffs be damned

Hahahahha I started listing all the things I directly rip off from the “Silent Within” solo, but I realized I’d be giving away all my “secrets” with one post.
I put like 3/4’s of the things he does in that one solo into ALL of mine.

What strikes me as funny is that for everything he’s said about developing yourself as a guitarist/musician, he hasn’t really applied that to his vocals. I know he spent a couple years working on it in the mid-90’s but I think when he didn’t get the warmest reception to it he just figured singing would be something he did for fun rather than making it a bigger part of his musical career.
“Rescue Me Or Bury Me”, while I don’t dig all the cadence or lyrics so much, his delivery and technique are pretty great and he can emote enough to sound legit when he sings, which is like 90% of what people connect with when listening to a singer.
And this solo is fucking nuts. My dad used to tell me “He probably sped it up, Andy, don’t get your hopes too high you’ll be able to play like that if he didn’t even play it” (kind of a microcosm for my dad’s advice to me when it came to music, in general
)

Latecomer to Huff by name, but I have dug his stuff in movies and hired gun work for years without realizing it was him.
Digging his channel. The one where he plays the Matchless got me invested.
Also, as far as Timmons’ solo stuff….legit! We had the same hair stylist back in the 90s and I ran into him a few times. Carpe Diem was fresh back then and sounded/still sounds like a turbocharged Summer Song
