7 Stringers- What's Your Preferred String Gauge?

I wanna take my 7-string EBMM JR Cutlass back to my std string gauge for std tuning, which is 10-56. (Tried the "heavy bottom" set and don't like it.)

Stopped by GC today, and they didn't have ANY in that gauge. (I'm a strict EB string guy.) Which I thought was odd, since I, maybe incorrectly, assumed that was a fairly popular string gauge setup.

Thus the question. If you use a heavier set, but tune lower than std, let me know.

Maybe it's just GC being GC, or that they didn't have any in stock because it's a popular size? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My Ibanez was on 9-54 stock, so I used to like it. Yes it is very soft! Got a few of 11-59 Elixir sets that I'm planning to use on next restring. However my tune is B standard this days. I tune my 6s lower lol

I’ve stuck to the Strandberg NYXL set mostly since it’s a Strandberg i have, so that doesn’t help. When I had a 25.5” scale seven I went for 10-62’s. Hated having flubby low strings on it. Today I’d probably try the Power Slinky 11-58 set, but guess that depends on if you can jive with the thicker unwound strings.

NYXL 10-59's.

Right now it's strung with a set of Dunlop Trivium strings for tuning down and it's in A standard, I thought I was going to dig it so much more than I actually do but I think drop A is as low as I'd ever want to go at this point.

I run .09 Boomers on everything it just makes string management easier. I grab 10 packs when they come up on SDOTD. I buy single .58s 10 at a time to match up with the Boomer sets for my 7 strings. This way I don't have to buy 7 string packs and I am saving $1-$2 per set.

I may have to steal that idea! :rawk

that is actually very clever! I’ve got like 10 packs of 9-42 packs of Elixirs from Sweetwater and then ordered matching number of 54 singles + sets for other guitars from Elixir directly. Price wise it was much better than buying individual packs. So in the end I got full 9-54 sets for my seven + 11-49 for my 6s in D standard.

I don’t fuck with 7 strings anymore but when I did back in the day I tuned to drop G# and would buy 8 string packs and use the lowest gauge for the 7, and toss the one actually meant for the 7th string lol
