2x12 cab only one speaker connected…difference?

A semi open back (oval opening in back) 2x12 Avatar cabinet.
Two speakers installed, G12H75 Creambacks.
Each speaker wired to its own 1/4” jack so two amps are connected, one speaker for each amp.

Is there any significant problem with performance / sound quality when using either amp compared to the same speaker in a 1x12 cab of similar design (semi open 1x12)? I’m guessing the one ‘dead’ speaker plus open back is reducing some effectiveness but I’m no Jay Mitchell.

I'm no expert on this, but if one speaker is not being used then it effectively becomes some kind of dampener that's attached to the baffle.
Not sure I've ever used a cab like this (purposely) with one speaker unused at times. I've removed a few speakers from a 2x12 and 4x12 arrangement though, so there are big port holes in the front. :grin But that's been years and it's more noticeable obviously in a room rather than mic'd up.

If you’re going to use only one speaker, remove the other. It acts as a front-ported cabinet and you’ll get the same SPL as you would using two speakers. It seems to retain its closed back tightness. The only thing you lose is power handling.

If you are going to use just one amp, why don't you simply connect the two jacks to your amp so you are using both speakers?

I’m trying get as many amps and modeling type devices all connected to real speakers so I can grab a guitar and plug in and play through anything with no stopping to move and or re-cable anything.

I think your best option in that case would be to invest in a cab switcher. DeLisle units are probably the most cost-effective.

I feel you tho, I hate moving and unplugging stuff.
