Who did you see live recently?

Thought this might be a better way to discuss random live shows without separate threads.

I'm two days into a three day "Yacht Club" festival. Highlights so far were Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Silversun Pickups, but there's some more 90's bands today like Green Day, 311, and Garbage. Apparently Blind Melon is playing too?

I did catch about half of Cory Wong's set which was a lot of fun. No surprise but a crazy group of musicians, drummer was amazing. It's funny for as much as I've seen Cory all over the guitar space I've barely heard him play any actual music.

I think the last show I saw was either Maynard from Tool's Sessanta with Primus, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer playing, or it was Geoff Tate. I need to see what's coming around, I know Nicko McBrain and Joey Belladonna are making their rounds at the rock club by me again, I'll go check those out but I'm not sure what bigger bands are playing. Dream Theater is in September I think, it's been 22 years since I've seen them live so I'll be stoked for that.

Pure class act. I use to teach metal kids to play all his stuff.

Cory’s band is KILLER! At one point it was most of Prince’s old band.

Petar Janjic is such a great drummer! He was Michael Bland’s protege and first call sub. He’s one of my favorites

Totally makes sense, the first thing I thought of was "holy crap this guy reminds me of Michael Bland"! When I took drum lessons in the late 90's my old drum teacher would talk about Michael Bland quite a bit because he had me studying a lot of funk books. I can't remember if he played or studied with him though.

Cory was talking about on TPS how he cut his teeth with former Prince musicians. That's got to be intimidating as hell! I was hoping they'd cover a song of his but knowing the Prince estate even playing one live might get you sued...

Quick reviews of all the bands I saw this weekend:
  • Sheryl Crow - didn't pay much attention but she sounded fine, maybe dragging a bit but hey she's in her mid 60's
  • Father John Misty - I really liked a couple of his albums but this was one of the most dreary and boring shows I've ever seen
  • Alabama Shakes - really good band, energy, and singer but not my style of music at all
  • Hozier - my wife loves him but yeah not my thing at all, kind of forgettable folk pop to me
  • Silversun Pickups - first band I actually wanted to see, they were pretty good, very noisy in a good way, solid energy, fun set
  • Motion City Soundtrack - unfortunately the singer has been battling some mysterious disease the last several years and had to cancel so Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy sang most of the songs, this was pretty good pop punk
  • O.A.R. - Y.A.W.N.
  • Remi Wolf - fucking terrible, if every other word out of your mouth is F--- and you need to sing about explicit sex, maybe hire someone else to write your lyrics
  • Weezer - pretty solid but energy was dragging a bit...very much seems like a band in their late 50's playing songs they wrote 30 years ago on the tail end of a long touring season. We did see the first night of the "Return to the Blue Planet" tour last year which was way cooler, this was a bit stripped down version. But like pizza even sub-par Weezer is still pretty good.
  • Fall Out Boy - really energetic and Patrick can sing like hell, but I don't like any of their pop stuff. They only played 1 song off their first album which is my favorite, and then chronologically went through their albums, so we bailed after 40 minutes.
  • Garbage - it was surreal to see Butch Vig in person...I saw them 30 years ago so neat to see them again, band was pretty solid for as old as they are. Really not a fan of their newer stuff which was paint by numbers politics but was cool to see them play the old stuff. Shirley got sick towards the end of the set because she wore what she called a plastic dress in the heat/sun but she gutted through and overall did really well.
  • Sublime - Brad Nowell's kid sounds EXACTLY like him. It was crazy. Not a big Sublime guy but they seemed fun.
  • 311 - I didn't get to watch their set much because we ran into my ex and talked with her for a while (kind of funny when your wife and ex get along really well), but they sounded great, just like they did in the 90's
  • Green Day - never saw them before, but they were the best band of the weekend. Really tight set, they can still play and sing with high energy, crowd was really into them. Of course I only like the early stuff but they played a lot of that through the set which was cool. Billie is awesome at crowd work, found a girl and pulled her on stage to sing a song which probably made her life and was super cool to see. Lots of respect for these guys.

Yeah, that had to be so intimidating! I’ve heard though that the way that happened was they all heard Cory playing around town and they were so impressed with him that they approached him about working together.

I’ve heard Cory talk about how no matter how good your timing is it can always be better, and no matter how tight you are you can always be tighter. Sounds like the mindset you’d have after a few years of playing with Prince’s band!

Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies, Ice Nine Kills, Devin Townsend, Tessaract. Going to see old man gangster rap duo (Pete and Bas) here soon-ish? and hoping to see Geoff Tate and Death Angel later this year.

Ghost.

No cellphones allowed.

Best concert in quite a while.

The no cellphone thing really is a treat. You really don’t understand how much they distract/change the vibe/atmosphere until you’re on a balcony overlooking the crowd and don’t see a single lit up screen. Really hope this catches on more, or they give the people who want to film a row behind FOH to stand back there and film all they want without annoying everyone else.

If you ever get a chance, go see the Koch Marshall Trio. I’ve seen them twice in Youngstown and I’ve got to say that it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a show both times.

My son went with me both times and he also had a blast.

Was just listening to his podcast this morning with Bukovac, pretty cool he’s got his son in the band playing drums with him. I love Greg’s playing but his personality/wit/sense of humor is what keeps me checking out every interview. Not big on his tones in general but would love to catch this show live.

Usually I'm constantly at shows, but this year I have not been on top of things at all, really not been to many that weren't ones I was playing at

Last show I attended was Metallica/Limp Bizkit

I drove to LA to see Agalloch in May at Hollywood Palladium. It was wonderful and worth it, however not the best sound. They played a trimmed version of “Ashes Against the Grain”. I needed to see them live since it is one of my foundational bands ever.
Next were “Emperor” but the sound was even worse. Not complaining though, was really good vibe and the crowd was top. Merch sold out before the show started. :censored:

Awolnation at HB here in San Diego. Blown away by their energy, sound quality. They sound much heavier than on the records. One of the best shows of the year.

Kaleo in Phoenix. Good show in the mid sized venue. Not my thing at all, but they had good bar and I used Waymo to get back to hotel :guiness:guiness

My wife’s bi-polar downswing kicked in seriously earlier this year, so we haven’t been out at all, but thankfully she’s come out of it…the last two shows we saw were last year:

1) Plant/Krauss. It was the second time we saw them, and was fabulous. JD McPherson opened and also was part of Plant/Krauss’ band, and was a monster. He had a downright greeeeeeeasy guitar tone (custom Gretschy-looking guitar through a juicy Fender).

2) The Warren Haynes Band (with orchestra). I love Warren to death, but last year’s tour he did with the orchestra backing was puzzling. I mean, kudos to him for trying something different, but the musical resume he has doesn’t really lend itself to an orchestral accompaniment. I thought I would give it a fair shake, but he played a lot of the same music you would expect (his solo tunes, Mule stuff, ABB etc.,) - and if you closed your eyes, you couldn’t even tell there WAS an orchestral accompaniment there, they were so buried in the mix. The orchestra added nothing, and I don’t recall him even giving them any chunks of time to shine. Totally unnecessary IMO, but still great music and it’s f’in Warren Haynes FFS!

We are hoping to catch TTB and/or Gov’t Mule on this go-round, although we may have to wait until next year.

I really want to see Ghost, but the closest they were to me is Cleveland and I couldn’t get there with my work schedule. Also keeping an eye out for some other smaller shows. Wife wants to see Chris Isaak in December back in our old stomping grounds.

I am (as well as my wife) at that age where the idea of arena or larger shed shows or lord help us - festivals - don’t have much appeal anymore. We may make an exception here or there (Heart/Cheap Trick last year), but I have pretty much seen all the big acts that I have wanted to, and mostly when they were still at or near their prime.

Maaaan I miss festivals. I’m not ready to check out from those yet… will come back soon…

Arena shows… eh they’re fun but shit the to/from is obnoxiously stressful anyway you slice it. Arenas are also categorically tend not to be the worst -sounding- shows
