What's the consensus on the Uber Ultra?

I own a Twin Jet and LOVE it, but I keep hearing rave reviews about the Ultra and it definitely seems to cover even more territory. I'm considering selling the TJ and one of my guitars and upgrading to the Ultra. What's the consensus on these? Which version should I go for? I don't generally like KT88s but the TJ sounds great with them, but it also seems like you can put them in the EL34 version, too?

Love mine! I have the el34 version. Way more versatile of an amp than you think. Took mine down to Nashville for a jam with old band mates and it was just awesome. The other guitar player has a Diezel VH2 which was also great. I preferred the Bogner a bit more but it’s more splitting hairs. Anyway he was blown away as well with the Bogner. He’s got an eye now for sure for a Snorker or I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets an Ultra. Anyway here is my studio setup. Sounds weird but I can get the Ultra to sound pretty classic in sound and that also mixes nice with the Suhr. It can sound modern but it gets a nice classic proximity too. Hope this helps.

Best amp ever made as far as I'm concerned.

I owed the Rev 2 and spent quite a bit of time on the Twin Jet.

The Ultra i had was the 6L6. It couldn't get exactly Rev 2 but i would say 90% there. Hard to compare as I had the Rev 2 YEARS ago but the Ultra is better.

Definitely more brutal, way more options, better cleans and just all around incredible.

You can get lost in it and may take months to figure out. Can do the Jose thing if you wish, crazy doom tones and Ultra brutal metal.

For me it has 2 shortcomings. First off it is the noiseist amp ever made and absolutely needs a gate. Absurd the amount of noise.

Secondly, I wish it got just a little tighter. Like Engl tight or whatever would be cool. I play fast and technical death metal at times and found myself wishing it responded a little faster and got a little tighter. It can definitely pull it off but I have to be honest, if it responded faster and got tighter if desired it would be the perfect amp.

Extensive research and testing yielded not possible as it has something to do with B+? Idk much about amps but it was discussed on SS.org

Anyway, those were my only quams and it's still the best I've ever played.

Had to sell it due to life issues but I will have another one day.

TlDR best amp ever made. I've heard some people say it sounds like a cardboard box and that the Rev 2 is better, couldn't disagree more.

Of the amps I own now if I had to go to just one amp…. it’s the one.

On the noise thing…. either mine is a quieter anomaly or I don’t have the gain up to a level that gets super noisy. Yes it’s got gain noise but I don’t find that the way I run it a problem but yeah a gate for sure if you want to put the gain up there a bit.

Definitely interesting on the noise, I use the gain. Definitely wasn't dimed but 60%-70% on that amp.

On my el34 iconic i have the gain at 3 with a boost and burn on. Just depends on the amp but I usually do go for the gain.

Also to add in general the Twin Jet is a killer amp as well as the Greens but idk to me the Ultra is on another level.

Good to know it can cover more ground than I was thinking. The TJ is really versatile on Channel 1 but it doesn't really do anything that isn't high gain. You could maybe do some mid gain stuff on Channel 1 but it wouldn't be my first choice for those sounds. Doesn't really do clean unless you like the cleans on a JCM800.

Why Engls are you talking about? The only Engl I've played is my Savage 60 Mk II and I don't find it that tight. I have heard people always describe them as super tight but it has a huge wall of sound with quite a bit of sag, which I love. I definitely like super tight amps but I get bored of them fast, so I honestly don't think of it as a bad thing that it can't get as tight as amps considered to be super tight. I actually find the TJ to be a bit tighter than I care for at times, which makes it a bit stiff for me. The Ultra seems like you can dial in the sag a lot easier, which seems cool.

That's good to know. I've heard these amps are super noisy. I don't generally use a ton of gain, but I do like to go a bit gainier on my TJ than I generally would because it brings in some sag. I do have a gate on my board so it's probably not a big deal. I doubt it's noisier than my Sabot. That thing is noisy AF.
