Heard this for quite some time and to be honest; seems to be a bit of a trick that kinda makes you doubt the ferocity of all those years of downpicking. Not really, but maybe just a bit  Seems like something Fleming should have kept to himself if we're being honest?

Maaaan if the downpicking was sped up in studio I’ll stop caring about it at the least, right now it makes me feel like less of a man when I try to cleanly downpick MoP lmao

I mean, there's a reason that Ride The Lightening isn't at 440Hz. I guess by MOP they released they should tune down a bit. I don't think it really matters how anyone achieves the sounds they get so long as it matches their intention. The result is the only thing that matters.

Kill em All sounds so sloppy, I think it was well worth Metallica doing all the tricks they could to convey their songs right.

I think Rasmussen is well within his right to disclose what he likes too, it's been decades now and record making has moved on a bunch.

I get using the techniques available to them at the time. It's just that a LOT of mystique has built up over the performances on MOP especially over the years and it has me scratching my head a little bit. Not to the point of not wanting to listen to it (to the contrary actually); just interesting. They definitely got their point across :satan

Studio trickery in the studio, probably cocaine live. It WAS the eighties, after all…

I’m not knocking the recording technique - just honestly kind of relieved that James himself needed that to get that crushing clarity and driving riff recorded properly. Makes me kind of feel better about myself in that way lol, I have never been able to downpick that song and call it good enough to record, I can do it alternate picking and that’s generally what I stick with regardless.

I sort of agree that we’re over exposed to everything these days and it removes the mystique. I like that Josh Homme wants to protect that a bit and I’m sure there’s others out there that view things similarly.

The tricks and techniques are cool but they so easily spin into a distraction and take away from the point of the song, rather than being a tool to communicate them.

Yeah it’s definitely a relief that those super human performances weren’t actually performed by a human.

Agreed 100%.

Records are not "real" by definition, they are art.

Speeding up is not different than overdubbing stuff, comping solos or vocal tracks.

I prefer records and concerts with little/no tricks and high levels of skill & soul but I disagree.

Records are like movies, you need to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the story.

That's fine, but if you need it to perform live you don't deserve to be on that stage, masquerading as an actual singer.

Nothing's Sacred Anymore!!! :(

So…. I know I made a joke about this earlier in the thread… but RoS came under SO much heat when their ex drummer alleged they did this…. Why would ‘tallica get any less heat?

For the record I saw RoS live in the early days with their OG vocalist, and they sounded legit, and Peter was a riot with the banter. I’d pay to see him doing standup :idk

Almost afraid to ask, what is RoS?
