I love flangers. The one that started it all for me was this vintage MXR-117 flanger my uncle gifted me as a young teen. It always amazed me as a young player, and as an adult I now realize I was very lucky to have crossed paths with this amazing circuit.

That pedal has seen better days, but is still here and kicking.

It’s mostly been retired but I’m looking forward to reintroducing it to my pedalboard…kind of.

That's the Holy Grail/Unobtanium pedal for John McGeoch fans and especially the Siouxsie and the Banshees album JuJu. MXR used to cite it as an example of how to get the most out of this pedal. The new ones that look the same are not.

McGeoch had 2, one mounted on a mic stand, so he could meddle with it live.

The Strymon Deco can do the JuJu tones - at least according to the web.

Everyone seems to be trying to achieve the breakthrough sounds of what people put together with whatever they had back when – not just Flangers and pedals but amps, guitars, speakers etc. Marshall was copying Fender amps with old spare radio parts and speakers available in the UK that distorted more than the better USA parts – and Classic/Heavy Rock was born!

Eddie, Andy Summers and, to me, McGeoch were the masters of the flanger, a long time ago now. Other users I see from a brief search are Tears for Fears, Heart, Doobie Brothers, The Eagles… ah the memories!

Apart from the Deco, I confess I am now a Phaser/Vibe dude. I don't know how that happened and I may be in need of a dedicated Flanger pedal - maybe an EQD Pyramids or Spaceman Aurora.

Very cool! My first pedal was a gift too, a Christmas present in Gr 7, I think. It was an Ibanez digital flanger, which I was actually pretty disappointed with because it sounded nothing like "Unchained". Sold it years ago. (Later learned this is the "Killing In The Name Of" intro flange, I think?)

I don't use flanger a lot, but when I do, with a Helix it's always the 117 model. Currently getting great results with "80s Rack Flanger" on my VP4, not sure what that is based on.
