Tough one. Lower watt = 50 watt head; then yes. Lower watt = el84 thingamajig; then no.
That suddenly made things veerrrrrrry easyI'm talkin 18w and lower.

Absolutely. I don't need anything super ridiculous but that extra bit of push on tap is much better to have and not need than the other way around. For me it's pretty much thump factor. I have gigged as low as 5w tube heads in the past and they were loud enough but even with a 2x12 or 4x12 didn't have hardly any thump to them. I totally gave up on low wattage tube amps. My last one was a 5150 III LBXII. Great amp but hardly any thump. After selling off my Pink Taco I have no more of them now.
Do you play them side by side or stacked up? I've always preferred side by side.50 watts seems to be perfect for where we are playing but I'm guessing we're a bit louder than most bar bands. Really though for me it's all about more speakers. I play through 2 4x12s at rehearsal and it's amazing. I wanna bring them to shows but am lazy and our set isn't long enough to justify bringing both.
I just changed my vote now that you post the rules I was thinking 20-50W vs 100WI'm talkin 18w and lower.
Username checks out.in band live all is maxed out..... my 100w is on full on .....
Most amps sound better with a 4x12 . It's the lugging around part that gets old!I've yet to try a 20w that cuts it with a band for me. Gigged a few times with Peavey Classic 30 as they were common "house amps" around the country in the 90s. They were all right, especillay with a 4x12"
