About the same time period. Late '60s throughout the '70s, although Rush lasted much longer due to Bonham's death. Vocals and instrumentation are similar. High register vocals, guitar, bass, drums and sometimes keyboards. Which do you like better?

For me Zeppelin has a stronger groove and rock harder although Rush is pretty darn good too.

Lyrically Zep is more raw and basic which I prefer. And Rush has more thought provoking, maybe more space fantasy or science fantasy in their lyrics.

So my vote goes to Led Zeppelin.

Rush never toured Australia in all their years - maybe 'coz we didn't care/buy albums. Actually, there were no Rush albums in the stores to purchase, no songs on the radio, nothing.

Zep: you can see the footage of the Sydney Showground show in The Immigrant Song video. Their first show in Perth was to 80,000 - in a 50,000 seat stadium. That was their first stadium gig. Their albums were in all the stores.

They never came back. Still, we Aussies tend to like acts that tour here, so no Deadheads. But we love Elton John, Pink, Taylor Swift, Brooks and Dunn and just about anybody who makes the effort.

But if you can't buy, hear or see the band... :idk

For me it's more like Led Zepellin or Cold Chisel?

Have you ever heard of Cold Chisel?
 
I love both, and Rush were clearly very Zep-influenced in their early days. But yeah, pretty different bands overall and not really contemporaries, I don't think?

One thing that comes to mind comparing them, is how totally sex-less Rush's music is. It just doesn't put those vibes out or evoke those feelings, which is not a criticism but more an observation (and my opinion, of course, this is all subjective). Whereas Zep is oozing with it, and not just lyrically, but in the grooves, riffs, etc.

Zeppelin was all over the radio when I was in JHS and HS, and in part I was inspired by their music to take up playing guitar in the mid 1970s. My younger brother plays the drums and he loved Neil Peart, so I got into Rush a bit later through him. We both had bands, etc. and eventually went our separate ways, but we always found some time to jam on Limelight, Circumstances, Rock and Roll and others when together.

My brother turned his sons on to Rush and he took them to see the R40 tour, about which they rave to this day, while I think Zeppelin in part turned me on to Indian and Arabic musics, which I still love today. In college I jammed on Black Mountain Side with an exchange student from India who played tablas, and when I first listened to Umm Kulthum with an Egyptian exchange student in university, I heard an echo of the roots of some Led Zeppelin tunes. So, as with others in this thread, it’s difficult for me to favor one of these bands over the other.
 
These two bands are opposites for me. Loved Zep back in the day. But now, I don't much care for anything except the the Zep III album which was always my fav. Didn't like Rush back in the day. Lee's voice grinded into my ears. Over time, I've come to appreciate them more and more.

Saw them on the Friday and Sunday .
Would have gone on the Saturday as well but had to go and see the Sensational Alex Harvey Band at Hammersmith Odeon for the recording of the live album.
