HX Effects to amp and FOH? 4 cable method

I currently use an HX Effects in 4cm with my 20 watt Marshall. Then I just mic my speaker cab. Is there a way I can load an IR into the HX Effects and send directly to FOH? And also have my on stage sound out of my amp, but not needing to mic it?

Yep. You will be applying an IR to the preamp section of the Marshall only. Not ideal especially if you're up loud and getting power amp saturation. It will "work" technically speaking.

I tried this option, and it seems to work well.

In my 4CM patch I added an IR block last in the Path and a Send 2 block before that.

Connect:

guitar -> HX In
HX Send 1 -> amp input
HX Send 2 -> amp return
HX Out -> FOH
amp Send -> HX return 1

If this becomes the norm for you I’d recommend getting a DI you can put between your power amp and speakers - this would allow your amp signal going into the HXFX to also include the power amp’s contribution as well as the cab impedance interaction.

Or have your tech put a slave out on your amp. Then you don’t need the outboard DI.

Can you recommend a decent DI? There are so many different types, I'm not exactly sure which to get.

I use a Two Notes Captor 8 in line between my head and cabs. Having the cab connected is essential there as the captor will not use its “less than totally authentic” load.

Late answer but still: Seriously, in case you're using an amp, get a DI box and an IR loader (or one of the IR loaders offering a combination). Insert it into your amp->cab path and send the balanced signal the FOH way. That way you get the full amp signal (with an IR of your choice, ideally representing your cab the best) out and there's zero advanced routing in the HXFX involved.
