Helix - Tweeds and Browns

Guys it must be something about clipping 40 but I’m suddenly interested in bourbon, World War I/II/(III?), and the old tweed and brown Fenders.

I know L6 added the Fender and Grammatico 5e3 in recent years. There’s also the 5f1 model but I’ve not found that one particularly inspiring. Maybe I should revisit that with the new cabs.

I’d love to have access to 6g2 and 6g3 tones in Helix, as they are pretty unique amps and IMO.

I’ve dialed in the Grammatico 5E3 to be sort of close to my 5E3 build. I never got close to matching my 5F1 build with the Helix Champ model. It would be good to see more 6G3 models in the world.

I picked up a factory built mojotone 5e3 a while back in part because of how much I liked the Helix 5e3 models. I do prefer my 5e3 but there are similarities for sure.

I’ve heard Ben Adrian say that the simple amps are the hardest to model. I wonder if this is why we don’t see many models of the browns.

Anytime you load up small tweed, first thing to do is turn hum and ripple all the way the fuck off. I'm totally with Jonathan Cordy on that issue. Open up the treble a bit. And because you are doing that, think of it as a tweed Princeton instead of a tweed champ.

Voltage Queen is The Best, IMO.

I’m still working with and learning this 5e3. It’s the least refined of any amp I’ve played or owned. It’s either OFF or INSANELY loud, which makes it a challenge to work with outside band volumes.

I’d like to explore adding a post phase inverter master so I can get some compression and grit without taking my face off.

I REALLY enjoy cranking it up all the way and controlling everything from my tele’s volume knob. It’s very responsive.

The volume is indeed touchy. If you are looking to tame the amp, try turning up the unused normal volume control up. With it really high (>3:00), your sound will clean up and gain will drop dramatically. Prior to that, it can add low end to your sound if you are looking for it.
