There are just so many iconic drive/dirt paired with modulation tones it isn't even a non-thing.
This has not been something I have dove into that deeply. Dumb old me strikes again. But this
past week with Rush/Alex Lifeson and Ritchie Faulkner/Judas Priest I am loving these driven tones
that are paired with Chorus, Vibe, Flange, or Phase. They are just so fun. I must have saved this
for a time when I could truly appreciate it late in life. :bonk

Flanger: Bark At The Moon, Limelight, Unchained.

Phaser: Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Atomic Punk.

Chorus: Pull Me Under, Zakk Wylde, Ritchie Faulkner---do both always have a chorus on? Sure sounds like it. :idk

Vibe: Robin Trower/Bridge of Sighs, Too Rolling Stoned.... always on?

Have any great pairings, or personal favourites??

Bet I’ll surprise everyone with this-

Gilmour using the Electric Mistress and the Yamaha RA-200 (rotating speaker) on his dirt tones for some movement that sounded more like chorus than flange. He never really ditched this aspect in his rig after, just implenmented different effects to do the same things.

Vibe AND actual rotating speakers-

Cantrell also used a Rotovibe on the Tripod album, which is what initially turned me onto it and made me love it more when I saw Zakk Wylde rocking one as well. I had one in high school and have no clue what happened to it.

What got me into this was the PastFX Chorus Ensemble I put on my Pedalboard a few weeks
ago. It was just Compressed Cleans with Chorus and then I realized with the Mix/Blend low
it sounds killer with Dirt..... and without getting too warbly. Can also get some cool Detune
(Isn't that what chorusing is based on anyways) ala EVH tones with a Chorus, too.

New to me rabbithole is a lot of fun!

It can be done and it can be done well. I like the sounds on pretty much all the examples above. For me it has been tricky to dial in dirt and modulation and get it right. However I have come up with a decent combo of phase and dirt and rotating speaker and dirt a few times after tweaking it for awhile. Sometimes it's frustrating because I spend a lot of time on it and it's still not as good as I'd like it to be.

I hear ya. I've tried it in 2 guitar bands and it just sounds like a mess. Especially if
and when both guitarists are using some modulation (mostly chorusing). I think it
is great for making one guitarist sound huge, though. Or huger than we actually are.

PastFX is going to be getting a nice chunk of my Christmas bonus in a few weeks. I would not be surprised if I end up with the entire Spectrum collection.

Last month I saw an older guitarist perform an original song in a band. He had a rotating speaker and also a regular amp working together. The rotating speaker sound was very subtle and the amp was past breaking up. He switched the rotating speaker on and off. He also manipulated the gain on the regular amp using a footswitch as their singer performed the song. It sounded so good.
