Just wonderin'. i have a mil and a half one, i think, and i really like it for softening down acoustic clack- but thinking of trying a one mil for electric just to keep a little bright edge on it.

i ve had decent results with ultex once its rounded and old, and casein just feels like about-to-be-binned ultex off the bat  you just cant lose em cause theyre like $4 each.

anyhow.. figured id ask if anybody liked em. havent tried some of the brown dunlops (tru tone or something?) and figured theyd be worth a whip too.

I like them a lot. Pretty close to BlueChip (also pretty close in price). If I were doing a lot of flatpicking on acoustic, I'd still have a Blue Chip.

I find the Dunlop Primetone material to be the poor-man's substitute in this genre of pick...has that "stiff but also kinda burnished" feel that allows you to get lots of volume and articulation, but the pick seems to slide off the string in just the right way that you don't get the clacky clack.

i kinda figured the dunlops would be maybe a super- ultex type of deal. i have no beef with that for sure- plain old ultex 1 or 1.14 has been a goto for a long time. i filed and polished the sides of stubbies too, and that works well for cheap and available!

i was lookin at the BC40 3R as well- seems like my fit!

cool- thanks BG!

I'm ready for a pick change I think. I really love the standard Flow 2.0mm, and have been using them for about 4 yrs now. The grip is great and the attack is quick, but the top end string zing is starting to grate on my ears a bit. It's Ultex.
Going to be doing some pick sampling soon and don't think I've tried casein yet? Loved the old Tortex for many years, but they don't last as long and the grip is not as nice as the Flow.

I haven’t tried more expensive picks, but I like Primetones a lot. Rounder and bigger sounding than other picks. I heard that acoustic players like Ultex picks, but it has a bit too much attack for me sometimes. I went through the electric and acoustic pick samplers from Dunlop wanting more, and felt much more at home once I tried the Primetone sampler.

huh- i dunno about these flow picks- whatre they about and do they make big triangles?

Not sure they make the big triangles in that exact material and grip? I could be wrong though.
They definitely have a brighter attack. Drop one on a table and it almost sounds like a coin.

argh- yeah, apparently no 1mm large triangles! dammit. and the primetones dont go as low as 1mm :/ hm. maybe blue chips are the way to go. the 1.5 casein i have is a little too beefy for electric and figure a little stiff and id drop it.

its always such a fine balance cause i only have half of my right thumb so i need enough real estate and just enough give!

I have a few Red Bear ones, they are really nice, and to me nothing like Blue Chip at all, totally different material.

yeah the casein one i have is like a milky white almost glasslike substance, and that turkey makes ZERO ping or fizz sounds. like at all.

i seem to be looking for the impossible- a 1.0mm casein triangle seems like unobtainium! best i can do is a pearse teardrop and i cant hold onto those cause without the top digit of my thumb, i drop BIG picks. regular teardrops are just too small.

martin makes a blue chip-esque 1mm but theyre like $25 a piece  not that blue chips arent nuts. but if its close.. eh.. mebbe?

ill check at elderly instruments- i got my 1.5 there a decade ago and still have it- mebbe they have lighter ones.

it looks like they make bozouki picks at .9-1mm.. but they say theyre fragile... which probably means id break em 😄 red bear looks awesome- thanks for the heads up!

I’ve got a couple of the D’Addario 2.0mm ones. I like them a lot for some things, not so much for others.

If you need projection and a strong attack that is nice and rounded, they are great. If you need subtlety and dynamic range they’re terrible.

yeah i feel that way about picks that thick too. its like playing with a 2x4 offcut.. the feel ON the strings is nice- but its a little too much there there. thats why i was hoping to find thinner ones, but may just be a limitation of the material that they break any thinner.

Yeah, could be. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen thinner ones made out of that material
